Scholarships

Each year, thousands of individuals across our Volusia-Flagler community make heartfelt contributions to our neighbors in need through our local United Way.  A few select individuals choose to move beyond the annual campaign, and create a lasting legacy for the future of our community.

Since 1983, more than 75 distinctive donors who have a specific interest in improving access to higher education for local students, have funded Community Foundation scholarships in affiliation with Sun Trust Bank. Selected students are chosen for the awards by a Foundation Committee, consisting of leading citizens of our area.

Sarah T. Fillingame Scholarship

In 2002, Sarah T. Fillingame made a generous gift in order to establish the Sarah T. Fillingame Scholarship.  It was the desire of Mrs. Fillingame to further the tradition of academic achievement in her family, by assuring that family members would serve on the selection committee in honoring qualified students.  The Fillingame Scholarship is intended to reward one outstanding student from each Volusia-Flagler High School for academic excellence, superior initiative, and outstanding commitment to community service.

The main criteria for selection of the Fillingame and Salisbury award winners are as follows:

  1.  Academic excellence (grades & SAT’s).
  2. Written recommendations by teachers and counselors.
  3. Personal initiative.
  4. A demonstrated track record in community volunteerism and service.
  5. Financial need.
  6. Plan to attend a local or state college in Florida.

The Community Foundation of Volusia & Flagler has been awarding scholarships since 1997, distributing over 200 scholarships to deserving students in need, many of whom plan to return our community in their careers.
